Jarren Benton is pissed over ‘Noisey Atlanta’

The Atlanta rapper echoes much of the criticism coming from outside the trap-happy scene depicted in the 10-part doc

? Halfway through the 10-part Noisey Atlanta documentary on Atlanta’s trap-happy rap scene, much of the city seems to be feeling some type of way. After episode four dropped this week, most of the critical murmurings hinge on what some perceive to be out-of-context exploitation — from Curtis Snow cooking crack in episode one to gun-toting rappers dry snitching on camera — and the lack of wider artistic representation.
?
? Jarren Benton, for one, is pissed.
?
? “Noisey actually pissed me off with that shit,” the Atlanta rapper tells HipHopDX in the video below, after an expletive-laced dismissal of the doc, starting around the 1:25 mark. “It woulda been cool if they did that, and then if they woulda showed another side of Atlanta.”

? Benton, whose comically absurdist lyrical approach bears the influence of Atlanta’s founding trap fathers, is a far cry from the current incarnation of pop trap that largely defines outside perception of the city’s music scene and culture. While much of the criticism is coming from outside the scene being depicted in the Noisey doc, Benton acknowledges the harsh realities exposed in the doc. But he’s no fan of Noisey’s hipster-safari approach to the subculture.
?
? “It’s not a fucking game. Don’t come to the city making the shit look like it’s a fucking game. That’s my problem,” he continues. “Show niggas something other than we just cook crack and turn up and carry guns, man.”
