Omnivore - “Top Chef: D.C.” Episode 8: LOST IN TRANSLATION

It’s hard to remember that Top Chef is actually a cooking competition and not “America’s Next Stand-Up Comic”, now that it has finally lapsed into complete self-parody. In between the yuks, though, last night’s episode was the first in a while to focus on cooking free of manufactured melodrama.

It’s hard to remember that Top Chef is actually a cooking competition and not “America’s Next Stand-Up Comic”, now that it has finally lapsed into complete self-parody. For last night’s menus-round-the-world contest, contestant Ed boasted that he’s an expert in Chinese cooking (the world’s oldest cuisine, with an unbroken history dating back 400,000 years to Paleolithic times) because he’s “had some Chinese girlfriends.” Stephen felt confident tackling Brazilian food “because I took my family to a Brazilian steakhouse once.” Alex got hungry pre-service and ate so many of his Spanish tortas that he ran out of food to feed the guests.

In between the yuks, though, last night’s episode was the first in a while to focus on cooking free of manufactured melodrama.
