Omnivore - 'TOP CHEF: D.C.', Episode 13: BETWEEN A WOK AND A HARD PLACE
The Top Chef contestants rang in the Jewish New Year of 5771 the same way we do back here at home: with a delicious Chinese meal.
The four surviving chefs have been packed off to Singapore. Before they even unpack or shower, they are given a tour of the most famous street food stalls in the world, and told to tackle the local ingredients using only a wok. Singaporeans are famously the most discerning and picky eaters in southeast Asia, and this is also the country with the highest execution rate in the world. Is this a country where you want to risk screwing up their historic cuisine? Good thing they don’t have one! In a country as polyethnic as Singapore, at least you don’t have to worry about defaming cultural classics.
