Hillcrest Brewery Company (HBC) is being touted as the world’s “first out and proud LGBT brewery”. The brewery will be opening next week in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood.

Recently, big business brewers have been paying more attention to the LGBT community. Last year, the Minerva brewery released a honey flavored beer that targeted gay consumption in Mexico, Japan and Colombia.

HBC will be serving homemade microbrews on tap, rotating selections from other local micro-breweries, and wines. The brewery will also be offering specialty pizzas baked in their double-lined stone ovens to pair with the grapes and grains.

The brewery will be joining the Mo’s Universe family of LGBT-friendly establishments, which include Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill, Baja Betty’s and Gossip Grill. Chris Shaw, owner of Mo’s Universe, decided to open the brewery after realizing how much beer and wine he was selling at his establishments.

Shaw said:
“Our businesses have always been a place to come as you are and be who you are...the brewery follows closely in the footsteps ‘but on high heels’ of Queer Beer in Europe, Purple Hand & Salamandra Beers from Mexico and Gay Pride Beer from Vermont, all of which have been previously marketed specifically to the LGBT market... However, HBC distinguishes itself as the “Queens of Beer” and the first and only openly gay brewing company in the world.”
