Straight Outta Stankonia - Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
I got soul, that's something that you ain't got
That's why your style is rot-ten
Stop in the land of ATL
Where nothing but pimps, fully equipped
Quick to make a sale, swell
— "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik," Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)
With its 1994 debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, OutKast became the first to appropriate Atlanta's three-letter airport code as designated slang for the city. The birth of "ATL" arrived before the world's busiest airport was renamed to honor the late Mayor Maynard Jackson and his $500 million efforts to build the world's largest terminal. According to Miguel Southwell, the airport's current Interim Aviation General Manager, Hartsfield-Jackson will accelerate $10 million renovations at Concourse B this summer. Like Jackson, OutKast helped turn ATL into a global destination and earn it the nicknames the "Third Coast" and "the Hip-Hop Capital of the World."
