Protomartyr plays the Earl Oct. 24

With ‘Relatives in Descent’ the Detroit-based outfit perfects a blend of post-punk poetry and wild-eyed experimentation

Protomartyr almost lulls listeners into a sense of calm with the group’s latest single, “A Private Understanding.” Singer Joe Casey croons with the literary coolness of a college professor. His soothing baritone belies his bleak musings when he sings: “I don’t want to hear those vile trumpets anymore/Conscience wakes despair/The night is an accumulation of dark air.” But when the chorus kicks in, waves of distortion spillover, drums work themselves into a frenzy, and the band reminds anyone within earshot never to be complacent for too long. It’s one of only two singles released so far from the Detroit-based group’s latest record Relatives in Descent (Domino); proof that Protomartyr has further perfected its blend of post-punk poetry and wild-eyed experimentation.
