Atlanta's tunnel-boring machine could be named after Killer Mike so make it happen, folks
Here are the final options to name the beast drilling its way from Bellwood Quarry to the Chattahoochee River
What should Atlanta name the 400-foot-long machine that's chewing an underground path from Bellwood quarry to the Chattahoochee River to create an emergency-drinking water reservoir? And one day in the future, Atlanta's biggest park?
City Hall officials in late July asked and Atlanta responded with more than 700 suggestions. They then carefully vetted finalists, weeding out the obscene and embarrassing names to avoid a Boaty McBoatface moment. "Bill Torpy" was not selected.
We hereby present the final three city-sanctioned options. Vote for your favorite at h2o4atl.com, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management website documenting the $300 million construction project.
Scarlett: We were expecting something in tribute of the famous fictional Atlantan who was obsessed with money and used convict labor in her lumber mill.
The Peach Beast: This is the "Hotlanta" of tunnel-boring machine names. And it sounds kind of gross.
Driller Mike: An obvious nod to the talented Atlanta rapper, businessman, and political activist. In this humble reporter's opinion, this should win by a jaw-dropping margin. Considering Killer Mike's social media reach, it probably will.
Polls close on Sept. 2. Choose wisely, Atlanta. And don't ask us how none of our suggestions made the cut.
