Urban Land Institute named nonprofit theatre group Dad’s Garage as a finalist for its Awards for Excellence. The awards, now in their 22nd year, honor “best in class” real estate development. Previous recipients of awards include the Center for Human Rights, College Football Hall of Fame, Atlanta BeltLine Eastside, and Centennial Olympic Park. The comedy club recently moved from their long-time home at 280 Elizabeth St. to a church in Old Fourth Ward, repurposing the building for improv, comedy, and other events the likes of which the former sanctuary has probably never seen. The remodel, helmed by Pimsler Hoss Architects, added a stage, rehearsal space, green room, dressing room, seating risers, and bar to the former house of worship. Dad’s Garage ran the most successful live theatre campaign in Kickstarter’s history to fund the project and, along with an anonymous donor who matched the Kickstarter and donations from the Board of Directors, was able to raise $690,000 to give its new home a complete makeover.

Winners of the 22nd annual Urban Land Institute’s award will be announced September 15 at an awards banquet at the Atlanta History Center. Other finalists include Ponce City Market, Abernathy Greenway Linear Park, Porsche Experience Center, Square on Fifth, The Office, and Waterhub at Emory.
