Atlanta Music Fest drops anchor in Murphy Park
Black Lips, 2$ Fabo, and more locals gather to celebrate the city’s music scene
Murphy Park is set to host the new and succinctly named Atlanta Music Festival on Saturday April 28th. The Atlanta Music Festival may be in its first year, but what it lacks in legacy it makes up for in energy and passion — and an impressive lineup of local musical acts. The inaugural bill boasts 13 of Atlanta’s most accomplished acts, all gathered to celebrate in the name of charity.
“How it works with the charities, is our charity, Ignite The World, Inc. organizes monthly concerts that benefit local charities,” says Atlanta Music Festival founder Judah Swilley. “[The festival] exists to raise the resources needed to ‘ignite’ these charities throughout the year.”
According to Swilley, a few of the local non-profits that are set to receive benefits from this year’s festival include H.E.R.O. For Children, a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS; Gateway Center, a non profit working to end homelessness in Metro Atlanta through therapeutic program and community collaboration; and Big Brother Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta, a non profit providing children facing adversity with one-to-one mentoring relationships.
“Those are just a few of the 12 charities that will be ignited this year in Atlanta,” Swilley says. “It’s our goal to raise awareness and resources for these causes by connecting the local music with the local movement.”
Nationally touring garage-rock act, and hometown hellraisers, Black Lips headline a bill stacked with fellow locals including lauded D4L cohort and “Gik’d Up” rapper 2$ Fabo, indie-rock four-piece Gringo Star (pictured above), and more. Food trucks and alcohol will be on the premise so attendees can eat, drink, relax, and enjoy some of the best of what Atlanta has to offer.
