TEARING UP THE CLUB: Eddie Tigner (left) with the Ink Spots, circa1 1959, at Lithonia Country Club.

If the late Pinetop Perkins was banging the 88s until he passed away at 97 years old, with live dates still penciled in on his calendar, then piano legend and Northside Tavern regular Eddie Tigner, aka Mr. Route 66, has enough gas in his tank to keep his own blues/jazz hybrids of songs such as "Going Down Slow," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" alive for years to come.

On Aug. 12, Tigner tickles the ivories with his sweet voice and his signature, swinging style that, despite his 92 trips around the sun, hasn’t aged a bit. The Uncle Sugar band plays host for the evening, and a parade of guest performers are a given at this high-profile event, which always makes for an evening of music that's exciting and unpredictable.

Sure it’s a Sunday night, but the early start time will set the tone for a rollicking week that will leave you with a joyous smile — one that mirrors the one plastered on the genial Tigner’s face. He’s one of Atlanta’s treasured roots music veterans, and he shows no signs of slowing down yet, regardless of how many candles are on his cake.
