Welcome to Creative Loafing’s weekend roundup podcast for May 10-12. Will Cardwell and Jacob Chisenhall join Music Editor Chad Radford to talk their top picks for weekend music and more. Turn on, tune in, go out!

Fri., May 10
Mothers, Locate S1, and Karaoke at the Bakery
Athens based Mothers’ wistful indie folk seems as cathartic and therapeutic for frontwoman Kristine Leschper (guitar, vocals) as it is for the listeners. $10-$12. 9 p.m

Shaky Beats Music Festival (May 10-11) at Central Park
Shaky Beats is Shaky Knees’ EDM cousin. The festival returns to Central Park for its fourth year, featuring a weekend chock-full of music, plenty of eats, and other activities. With four stages showcasing more than 40 acts, the rising electronic music gathering has quickly established itself as a fixture in Atlanta’s festival circuit. This year, artists such as Martin Garrix and Rüfüs Du Soul headline Shaky Beats, and solid acts such as San Holo, Big Gigantic, Snakehips, and PLS&TY round out the weekend. It’s a can’t-miss outing for ravers, bass heads, and electronic music aficionados. $99- $444. Check out the website for schedule and lineup.

OutlantaCon 2019 (May 10-12) at Renaissance Concourse
OutlantaCon is a hyper inclusive convention that offers a safe place for queer nerds to geek out over their favorite fandoms. $60-$100.

Sat., May 11
Paladin, Theocracy, Double Ferrari, Moonshield at 529
Paladin headlines a night of searing riffs in East Atlanta. $10-$12 8 p.m.

Sweet Auburn Springfest (May 11-12) at Historic Auburn Avenue District
Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with the 35th annual Sweet Auburn Springfest, a giant-scaled outdoor shindig with live music, interactive activities, and a plethora of eats. Free. 11 a.m. Sat., May 11; 1p.m. Sun., May 12.

K Michelle Dubois, Lesibu Grand, and Twin Trances at the Earl
K Michelle DuBois has a long, rich history as an Atlanta singer and songwriter who’s worked with everyone from Ultrababyfat and Luigi to the Rock*A*Teens. For this show she’s playing songs for her third and latest solo album, Harness. $10-$12. 8:30 p.m.

Groove Centric and Julie Dexter perform at Washington Park
This performance kicks off the City of Atlanta’s Jazz In the Park series. To learn more, read this month’s CL music feature, The Atlanta Jazz Festival at 42: Makaya McCraven, Joel Ross, Kandace Springs, and more offer a look at the shape of jazz to come. Free. 4-8 p.m.

Jacob Deaton Trio and Mabu's Ark Band at Grant Park
This performance is part of the city’s Jazz In the Park series. To learn more, read this month’s CL music feature, “The Atlanta Jazz Festival at 42: Makaya McCraven, Joel Ross, Kandace Springs, and more offer a look at the shape of jazz to come.” Free. 4-8 p.m.

Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington: On Cinema at Variety Playhouse
The AdultSwim.com comedy series takes the stage for a live recreation of the cult classic. $34. 7 p.m.

Sun. May 12
Speedy Ortiz at the Masquerade (Purgatory)
What started out as the solo project of frontwoman Sadie Dupuis, Speedy Ortiz melds Dupuis dreamlike indie pop vocals and lyricism with decidedly more fuzzy and rock focused instrumentals. The group is promoting their most recent offering Twerp Verse, an empowering collection of odes of resistance and feminist urgings. With each ticket purchase, the band will be donating $.50 to Girls Rock Camp Atlanta. $12.50. 7 p.m.

DfTaLS, Space Saver, Helton & Bragg at the Bakery
The Bakery serves up an exceptionally tasty triple-bill featuring Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel, Space-Saver, and Helton & Bragg. Listening Post regulars will no doubt be familiar with DfTaLS, the world’s most successful and longest-lived pairing of non-fixed pitch instrument players. Space-Saver is the latest project of Travis Thatcher, an Atlanta expat who conjures up joyous and frightening free noise collages from saxophones, drums, and oddments. For the last several years, homeboys Blake Helton (percussion, synth, electronics) and Colin Bragg (guitars, electronics) have been channeling everything from sci-fi soundtracks and Eberhard Weber to Indian ragas and Funkadelic. $5-$7 (suggested donations). 8:30 p.m. — Doug DeLoach

Welcome to Creative Loafing’s weekend roundup podcast for July 19-21! Will Cardwell, Jacob Chisenhall, and Sophia Rubin join Music Editor Chad Radford to talk about their top picks for the weekend, including Ex Hex at the Earl, Wild World at Zoo Atlanta, Oye Fest at Masquerade, and more!

Fri., July 26
— Animated Record Pop-Up at the Bakery
Introduce yourself to a totally new kind of art during The Bakery’s Animated Record Pop-Up this Friday. Drew Tetz will be putting his trippy animations on display by applying a modern twist to an old style type of animation called phenakistoscopes, in which Tetz combines the use of a record player and camera phone to create the false impression of images moving in space. It’s an artistic event quite unlike anything we bet you’ve seen and you don’t want to miss it! Free. 7 p.m.

— Ex Hex at the Earl
Ex Hex features singer-guitarist Mary Timony of Helium, Betsy Wright (bass, vocals), and Laura Harris (drums). They’re on the road playing songs from their latest album, It's Real. It’s a pretty rockin’ affair, and kind of a back-loaded record. The energy really picks up with a song called “Diamond Drive” and rides a melodic, forward motion through the b-side. $16-$18. 8 p.m.

Sat., July 27
—Atlanta Ice Cream Festival at Piedmont Park
Soak up the summer sun surrounded by friends, fitness, and, most important of all, ice cream! The Atlanta Ice Cream Festival is back for its 9th year, bringing together live music from local artists, health and wellness activities, and America’s favorite summer dessert in the heart of Piedmont Park. Enjoy a frosty treat then burn off the calories with a stimulating work-out by participating in Zumba, yoga, tai chi, or line dancing. And while you’re there, help yourself to a free wellness screening. Free. 11 a.m.

— Wild World Weekend at Zoo Atlanta (Saturday and Sunday)
Experience the world at Zoo Atlanta’s Wild World Weekend. Explore different cultures and biodiversity from every continent through special entertainment, crafts, and activities designed for the whole family. See dances from Indonesia, listen to steel drum performers, experience flamenco, and learn origami. It’s like taking a vacation to every country. 9:30 a.m.

— Collision Recordings Presents: Ritual Night
Come to the Bakery for a night of Techno bops! With a suggested donation of just $5 dollars, you can listen to some of your favorite techno artists alongside live visual art by Studio Mobius w/ Sami Black & Analogzilla. This night is a particularly special one, as Ritual Night will be John Shallcross’ (Cardio ATL) first Techno set in Atlanta for quite some time, in addition to the musical talents of Ajhenda (Wiggle Factor), Kohanim (Collision Recordings) and tdel (Silent Season). As their website suggests, this an event only for the non-assholes of the world! So leave your thickhead friends at the door and come ready for a night of positive energy and techno vibes. $5 suggested donation. 10 p.m.

— The Isley Brothers at Chastain Park Amphitheatre
Get ready to "Twist and Shout" with the Isley Brothers! Since 1954, these four brothers have brought their soul, blues, and motown hits all across the country, garnering multiple Top 10 Billboard singles and four Grammys. The Isley Brothers have inspired generations of musicians, and now they’re reliving all their biggest hits at the beautiful State Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain. Don’t miss this chance to bop around to timeless tunes and experience these musical legends live. $37.50-$87.50. 8 p.m.

— Oye Fest
Oye Fest, Atlanta’s premier Latinx music and arts festival brings a day-long block party, market, and an evening of music in Heaven at the Masquerade Saturday, July 27. The festival’s co-founders Randall Ruiz (Florista) and Margarita Rios stopped by CL's Short Notice studio to talk about creating a community in Georgia, and the line up for this year’s festival. The free block party and artist market kicks off from 5 p.m. till 2 a.m. in Kenny’s Alley, and features performances by DJ EU, Nino Augustine + Friends, GH Pancho, Esme, DJ Meatball, Jamesjuan007, Mafioso, Brian Rojas, Xavier BLK, Elio Stereo, and Rob Sessions. Inside, the Heaven stage features performances by Nina Sky, Tomasa Del Real, La Goony Chonga, Kibi James, Karina Es Mia, Felicita, Anonima, and Hourglass. $15. 5 p.m.

— The Princess Bride at The Fox Theatre
This Saturday, The Princess Bride will be featured on the big screen as part of the 2019 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival. Watching a movie at the fabulous Fox Theatre is always a cinematic experience. The theater is renowned for its classical architecture and long history, so what better place to soak in some of the best films of years past? $10. 7:30 p.m.

Mon., July 29
— This Is Not This Heat w/ Bradford Cox at the Earl
Since 1976, This Heat has paved the way for a creative strain of avant-garde, industrial, and post-punk music before punk rock even existed. Surviving members Charles Hayward and Charles Bullen have reunited as This is Not This Heat, putting a cap on a 40 year musical legacy. $35. 7:30 p.m."

$35. 7:30 p.m. Courtesy of Ground Control Touring HOT AND COLD: Ex Hex plays the Earl Friday, July 26. 0,0,5 Podcast: Weekend roundup July 26-29 "

Welcome to Creative Loafing’s weekend roundup podcast for June 7- June 9! Will Cardwell, Jacob Chisenhall, Sophia Rubin, and Narah Landress join Music Editor Chad Radford to talk about their top picks for weekend music and more. Turn on, tune in, go out!

Fri., June 7
— Jamilla Woods, Nitty Scott, Dri Jack at the Masquerade (Hell)
If you’ve been worrying about a sophomore slump from Jamila Woods, you can stop. The Chicago poet, singer, and songwriter’s 2016 debut album HEAVN was an immersive and spirited celebration of black girl magic set to a soundtrack of future-jazz, hip-hop, and soul, and her follow-up effort, Legacy! Legacy!, feels more substantial in every way. With tracks named after inspirational people of color like Nikki Giovanni, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sun Ra, and Frida Kahlo, Woods’ second full-length is packed with sturdy beats, fuzzy synths, startling guitar solos, and a welcome dab of experimentation. As always, she uses her words to distill human existence down to its basics: “I’m trying to see eye to eye but you look right over me,” she sings in “Eartha,” named for Miss Kitt. “Your words stuck on repeat and I’m tired of your shit.” Without question, Legacy! Legacy! will go down as one of 2019's best albums. $15-$18. 8 p.m. — Ben Salmon

— Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Noname, Thundercat at Cadence Bank Amphitheater at Chastain Park
Since dropping Malibu in 2016, Southern California rapper Anderson .Paak has become something of an enigma through his high-energy live performances and collaborations with the likes of Dr. Dre. With his latest album, Ventura, featuring Smokey Robinson and Andre 3000, he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. On album highlight “King James,” .Paak delivers an airy jazz-pop ode to LeBron James that addresses using privilege to give back and shed light on injustice. Noname and Thundercat fill out the bill. $32-$135. 7:30 p.m. — Jake Van Valkenburg

— Beltline Sunset Hike
Enjoy time in nature while also watching the sunset over the skyline at the Beltline Sunset Hike hosted by REI & The Georgia Conservancy. In this event you’ll be introduced to natural spaces along the Beltline (before the Beltline itself mowes it over, that is) as well as fellow hikers and other Atlanta residents that love both the natural and urban world. Free. 7:30 p.m.

— Gabbie Rotts Album Release + Girls Rock Camp ATL Fundraiser at Star Bar
Gabbie Rotts, a grunge pop trio, plays at the Star Bar in support of Mystical Harmony, released May 24. All proceeds will be donated to Girls Rock Camp Atlanta. With Boygirlfriends, Haint, and Pansy. $10. 9 p.m.

— Seventh Annual Atlanta Moon Ride at Piedmont Park THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO JUNE 21 DUE TO WEATHER
Come live out your inner child, as well as help other children with terminal illness, with a bike ride around Atlanta in the moonlight! Each ticket for the annual moon ride in Atlanta goes to Bert’s Big Adventure Foundation, as well as provides a night of unconventional fun. This ride is for all ages and skill levels and will kick off with a pre-party in Piedmont Park with food trucks, drinks and jams to get you revved up for the midnight madness. $35. 7 p.m.

— Chris Fleming at Plaza Theatre
Chris Fleming is a relatable, yet completely obscure and theatrical comedian known for his YouTube car rants and “Gayle” series. $25. 8 p.m.

— Summer Stunner II at 529 and the Earl
Summer Stunner is an annual gathering of garage punk rabble rousers who want to have a good time all the time. Groups like Dinos Boys, Gunpowder Gray, Candy Ci77arettes, Mongo, Fast Eddy, and Fixed Faces tear up the EARL, while Golden Pelicans, Metalleg, Alligator Alley, Adam Anzio, and others bring the heat at 529. $12-$35.

Sat., June 8
— Monster Fish at Fernbank
A chance to learn about the very real monsters that dwell in America’s rivers. The exhibition includes five life sized sculptures and interactables. Free.

— Identikit, Clockwork Pioneer, Star Period Star, Help!Computer at Smith’s Olde Bar
Head on over to Smith’s Olde Bar to experience a set oozing with fusion, “many adjectived-prog,” Savannah prog rock, and “bleep blorp”. $8-$12. 9:30 p.m.

Sun., June 9
— Atlanta Streets Alive: Cross-City Route
Experience the wonder of atlanta without all the blaring car horns and angry motorists. This weekend’s route of car-blocked streets goes from DeKalb Avenue and Decatur Street to Marietta Street and Howell Mill Road, combining the east and west routes from previous years. Walk or bike any or all of this year’s 10 mile stretch, enjoy booths and events hosted by community organizations, local businesses (did someone say breweries?!), and sponsors. Free. 2 p.m."

Free. 2 p.m. Courtesy Melt! Booking LEGACY! LEGACY!: JAMILA WOODS PLAYS HELL AT THE MASQUERADE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 7. 0,0,4 Podcast: Weekend roundup June 7-9 "

Fri., May 24
— Bubbapalooza no. 28 at the Star Bar
Bubbapalooza kicked off in 1991 (maybe ’92), as a gathering for Atlanta’s much ballyhooed Redneck Underground scene.

Each year, the festival returns to the Star Bar to celebrate the memory of Cabbagetown local and guitarist Gregory Dean Smalley of Redneck Underground rockers the Diggers. Smalley died from complications related to HIV in 1996. Bubbapalooza is also a barnburner of a good time. Rod Hamdallah and Rev. James Leg co-headline tonight, Friday, May 24. The Delusionaires, Ghost Riders Car Club, Andrea & Mud, and more play Saturday, May 25. Michael Tolcher, Blackfox, the Hills and the Holler, and more play Sunday, May 26.

Check out this week’s CL podcast with Rod Hamdallah.
