THE MOVE: Plan Accordingly - May 2021

Hey, y’all! What’s the move?

NOTHIN’ LIKE THE REAL THING: Nonsense ATL is bringing the party offline again, twice monthly at the Basement in East Atlanta Village.

The Move was og intended to get you out of the house, interact with strangers, and return home with new experiences, not coronavirus. The “new moves” recommended in this column are to be consumed at your own risk — preferably while wearing a mask.

Cute plague trends to keep on a soon-to-be post-pandemic planet:  Hand washing/sanitizer everywhere, personal space, masks are fashun too, stay cashless, delivery of everything, working from home, j.o.m.o. — the joy of missing out. And let’s thank QR codes for making the comeback of the century.

Curated below are both on and offline happenings this month in the A. Read on for the tea, spring pandemic bunnies.

And So We Begin: Community Mural Project Artist Talk

The Community Mural Project has gathered creatives from numerous disciplines to present a multitude of perspectives of Atlanta’s future and is the commencement of the Atlanta Futurists. Atlanta futurism is an imagined community of creators that make the art that creates, celebrates, and documents lived experiences and imagined futures for a more equitable and inclusive future where everyone has the room to breathe and be. Through a mutual interest in archiving, this conversation gathers together artists whose contributions to the mural expand our understanding of Atlanta’s infrastructure, erasure, and art as a healing practice.

This conversation will be moderated by Jasmine Wilson and include panelists Magda Dumitrescu, King Barnes, and Chanell Angeli.

Femme Jazz Funk Dance Class

Dancing is the most fun way to move the body, period, end of story, just hush and try it. Fact, most of us aren’t professional dancers, which doesn’t matter whatsoever in Chantel Serita’s Saturday Zoom classes. “You’re not the only one who struggles to confidently dance and take up space. I’m here to tell you that ANYONE can dance! Femme Jazz Funk vibes are all about leaving judgmental thoughts behind (and) finding harmony of mind and body through dance.

“You’ll leave class feeling energized and ready to take on the rest of your day, free of self-criticizing thoughts, more confident in your feminine (compassionate) energy. Let’s come together and set some positive Femme vibes by finding harmony of mind and body through dance.”

Chantel Serita is a professional teaching artist and former gymnast. She specializes in hip-hop and is inspired by dance styles from the African diaspora such as dancehall and Afrobeats. Chantel believes in finding harmony of mind and body through movement. Her classes are a reflection of these styles. “Put on your best dancing outfit, and join us on Zoom for Femme Jazz Funk, honey!”

Not vaccinated? Still at risk for going out? Don’t fret, sweat — via Zoom every Saturday at 1 p.m. If you register outside of eventbrite, be sure to email chantelserita@gmail..com for the Zoom link. Register through eventbrite at:

BOSSA :

There’s no date or time bc these events are kept on the DL until days before. An intentional move by DEF Atlanta to keep things underground. Define Everything Future is a group of artists, activists, and visionaries that popped up on IG back in 2018 @defglobal and became an instant source for offline raves.

Last month, the organizers had a massive turnout at a secret tunnel location in southeast Atlanta. Wanna get in the loop? Text CREW to 404-737-1163 to get event info before they announce the next pop-up rave publicly. Rumor has it MARTA is the next stop.

New in Town

Puttshack

West Midtown has become Atlanta’s hub for adult activities. Starting with Ormsby’s massive basement game rooms, then the addition of The Painted Duck’s bougie adult indoor fun park, to Top Golf, and now, Puttshack. Caddy-corner to Ormsby’s, there’s a building so new, we didn’t know it existed. It’s called The Interlock, and it’s home to putt-putt courses that resemble games of our youth, like beer pong and Skee-Ball. The difference is you’ll be hitting a microchipped golf ball with your name and score attached into giant solo cups with a putter.

“We’ve rewritten the rules of mini golf — pairing modern tech with crazy courses and cool vibes with game faces for one hell of a good time.” — Puttshack and the founders of Top Golf. (Puttshack was founded by “Adam Breeden, founder of Acebounce and co-founder of Flight Club and Steve and Dave Jolliffe, founders of Top Golf.” http://emergingconcepts.com/portfolio/puttshack/)

The whole place is the definition of Instagrammable. From the multiple courses covering two floors, to the large patio deck overlooking 14th and Howell Mill, to the literally smoking cocktails that come out in a treasure chest — and the food slaps pretty hard too. Great for all ages, families, friends, work groups, and really any HUMAN gatherings, which can’t come soon enough.

The Ten Spot

There’s a new bar in town. This one hydrates from the outside without breaking the bank or your schedule. THE TEN SPOT calls themselves the original anti-spa beauty bar, providing guests with a new option for efficient, yet impeccably executed beauty services with an unpretentious vibe, in a spotless environment.

Yes, it’s a chain! But it’s so cute, bright, happy with head-to-toe orange ambiance! It’s a welcoming, clean environment, offering laser hair removal, waxing, nails, facials, brow and lash tinting, and perfect for any age or any gender. We recommend the quickie facial for $60, bc it shouldn’t cost a stack to have one put the lotion on its skin. —CL—
