$9.25-million in upgrades for Lynwood Park

The largest greenspace renovation project ever conducted in Brookhaven will include an “ultimate splash pad” with water cannons, multiple oversized spouts, and slides, city leaders say. In addition, a new swimming pool with pool house is being installed, along with a multi-use synthetic turf field and upgraded landscaping.

It’s all part of a $9.25-million upgrade for Lynwood Park, located northeast of Buckhead. The neighborhood was established in the 1930s as the first predominantly Black subdivision in DeKalb County. Segregation, blight and crime and gentrification have all left their mark on the area in ensuing decades. According to Urbanize, a student group known as the Lynwood Trailblazers who in 1968 “bravely entered the previously segregated DeKalb County School System” are to be honored with a plaque on the premises.
