NEWS BRIEF: Stewart Detention Center survivors file lawsuit alleging sexual abuse, retaliation
How many women have suffered?
Four women who were confined at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, GA, are suing the U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency alleging a pattern of sexual assault and retaliation at the facility.
The complaint covers the period between July 2021 to January 2022 and contains firsthand accounts of abuse by a male nurse while seeking medical care. The filing alleges ICE officials were aware of multiple accusations against the nurse and sought to suppress the information. Furthermore, the unnamed nurse continues to treat individuals at the facility who “are made especially vulnerable by their detention,” a press release noted.
“I’m livid knowing that this man is still working at Stewart after having abused me and so many girls, even when the entire Stewart staff knew what happened,” states complainant Viviana Doe. “It scares me so much to see Stewart staff cover up to allow the abuse of so many women, and that the employee who sexually harassed me is still there, exposed to hundreds of women.” Details: southernmovement.org
