Marsy’s Law for Georgia presented its Champion Award to advocate Derek Marchman at an Oct. 12 ceremony for his three decades of work supporting the rights of crime victims. Marchman helped pass the state’s Victim Bill of Rights and Family Violence Act, and aided in enacting institutional changes as the director of the Georgia Victims’ Compensation Program. He also assisted victims of the 1996 Olympic bombing by ensuring their medical bills, family privacy issues and trauma were addressed, the announcement read. Furthermore, Marchman lobbied legislators to add a percentage of fines and parole fees into the Crime Victims Fund, resulting in more than $20 million awarded to over 4,800 victims or their families annually.
