W.E.B. Du Bois Revisited: Re-imagining Du Bois’ work from “The Exhibit of American Negroes” from the 1900 Paris Exposition at the African Diaspora Art Museum of Atlanta revisits one of the most significant visual projects of the early 20th century through a contemporary lens.

Originally presented at the 1900 Paris Exposition, Du Bois’ Exhibit of American Negroes brought together photographs and data visualizations to challenge prevailing racist narratives and document the achievements of Black Americans in the decades following emancipation. Created in collaboration with students at Atlanta University, the project combined rigorous data analysis with striking visual presentation to assert a narrative of dignity, progress, and self-representation.

This contemporary reimagining, developed by journalists Mirtha Donastorg and Natrice Miller of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution under the direction of Ernie Suggs, updates select visualizations using current economic and demographic data while reinterpreting the photographic component through present-day images of Black life in Georgia.

By placing historical and contemporary perspectives in dialogue, W.E.B. Du Bois Revisited highlights the enduring relevance of Du Bois’ vision, emphasizing the role of data, imagery, and storytelling in shaping cultural narratives and challenging systems of representation.
