Waveless builds beautifully dreary soundscapes cut from equal parts melodic shoegaze textures and jagged post-punk energy. Guitarist Dustin McChesney and bassist Hannah Fraser’s side-by-side vocals slice through the haze on Spirit Island EP cuts “My Apathy,” “Through Meditation,” and “Dark Day.” Each song layers real-world experiences and emotions in sonic abstraction. Chemistry is thick with Waveless, but the Minneapolis trio didn’t become so tight overnight. McChesney, Fraser, and drummer Jared Sather cut their teeth playing together and learning each other’s instincts as members of Twin Cities hardcore band Total Trash. Bring earplugs.
