CL RECOMMENDS
CL Critic Hal Horowtiz Recommends: His booming baritone voice isn’t named Big Velvet for no reason. Texas raised Cauthen took his country roots, added some disco beats and attitude and let loose with the throbbing “Cocaine Country Dancing” which became a left field roots hit in 2019. That warmed up his audience for this year’s even edgier “Country as FK” and “Fk You Money,” neither of which will find a home on commercial radio. That makes him unconventional at best. But when he plays it straight, he’s a potent country singer and writer who isn’t afraid to bite the hand that feeds. — HH
