CRITIC’S PICK: Fretwork fiends, get ready for a gargantuan three-headed guitar fandango at Railroad Earth on Saturday Sep. 21. Headliners Mike Baggetta (mssv) and Peter DiStefano (Porno for Pyros) bring decades of offbeat solo, dueling and ensembling expertise to the party. “Expect improvised ‘Punk Jazz’ music for two electric guitars, electronics and maybe some vocals,” says Baggetta.
Bill Taft’s “guitarguments” are an ongoing research project focused on solo pieces for prepared guitar. Metal clips, screwdrivers, weird electronic stuff and sundry gizmos provide alternative avenues for exploration. “Some guitarguments are ugly; some are pretty. Sometimes I win the guitargument; sometimes the guitar wins,” says Taft.
Atlanta saxophonist and composer Jeff Crompton and Chattanooga’s latest resident worldly music purveyor, guitarist Rob Rushin, are Robocromp. A founding member of the alternative rock band Porno For Pyros in 1992 with Perry Farrell, Stephen Perkins and Martyn LeNoble, guitarist Peter Distefano has been heard all over the world for decades with their first album reaching no. 3 on the Billboard Top 200. In addition to his work with Pyros, Peter has featured in various projects with Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus, and the band Hellride with Mike Watt. He is also known for his extensive recent work as a composer and musician for many soundtracks in film, television and gaming.
