Early James, Vinyl—Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach discovered and has promoted this offbeat folk/blues/jazz/gospel/country inflected Alabama based artist. James’ cracked voice and near unhinged singing is not for everyone. But when he hits a groove, it’s incredibly moving and certainly no one else sounds like him. He exudes Southerness from his pores, leading a three-piece that somehow follows his divergent musical paths. All three of James’ albums are compelling but he’ll highlight music from the recently released Medium Raw, a collection that captures his quirky weirdness in a live-in-the-studio performance, once again aided by Auerbach. — Hal Horowitz
