CRITIC’S PICK: During the last decade, I have attended a couple of annual performances of John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’ at Oakhurst Presbyterian church; both occasions were deeply moving, spiritually uplifting experiences. Regardless of whether you are familiar with the most revered Coltrane composition and the album, which was released in 1965, do your soul a favor and make plans to attend this concert.
Originally performed by the “classic quartet — Coltrane (sax), McCoy Tuner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums) — ‘A Love Supreme’ is a four-part suite comprising composed and improvised sections, recorded in one session at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in New Jersey in Dec. 1964.
This year’s Oakhurst Presbyterian quartet features Mike Walton (sax), Craig Shaw (bass), Che Marshall (drums) and Matt Wauchope (piano). Music nerds note: In addition to writing the liner notes, which describe a personal spiritual awakening, Trane selected the artwork for ‘A Love Supreme including the iconic headshot on the front gatefold cover. - Doug DeLoach
