CRITIC’S PICK
Sat., Feb. 22
Capping off the 2025 Roswell Roots festival is the brilliant multi-instrumentalist (cello, guitar, banjo), singer and songwriter Layla McCalla. Daughter of Haitian emigrants and activists, McCalla melds history, politics, folklore and news of the world to create a uniquely compelling musical experience.
From Vodou to the blues, kompa to Cajun, Nigerian highlife to New Orleans strut, the former member of Carolina Chocolate Drops leads audiences on a deep journey through the Black diaspora. In McCalla, Roswell Roots organizers could not have chosen an artist better suited to fulfilling the month-long festival’s mission to educate, impact and promote cultural awareness. – Doug DeLoach

From the venue:
Leyla started with the Grammy Award–winning Carolina Chocolate Drops before leaving to focus on her solo career. Her international concert tour in support of her current album Sun Without the Heat, makes its Metro-Atlanta stop as the grand finale of the Roswell Roots 2025 festival. Daughter of Haitian emigrants and activists, McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present – her music vibrates with three centuries of history and influences from around the globe. Her stunning mastery of the cello, tenor banjo, and guitar coupled with her skill as a singer and songwriter, she produces a distinctive sound that reflects the union of her roots and experience.
This is part of the 2025 Roswell Roots celebration. Roswell Roots is a community-wide, month-long festival that honors our diverse community and celebrates Black History Month. Roswell Roots aims to educate, impact, and promote cultural awareness.
