CRITIC’S PICK: As a welcome respite from the seasonal scrum, witnessing the creation of radiant soundscapes in the Pine Lake Beach House sounds like a wonderful way to spend a Saturday evening in December. Composer, guitarist, filmmaker and videographer George Trotter has been a stalwart member of the Atlanta avant-garde for decades, scoring and performing music for innumerable projects. Also on the “Celestial Sojourns” program is Skyeris, an Atlanta-based musician and author whose luminous ode to fireflies, ‘psync. fire,’ should be the next thing you listen to. The celestial sojourning begins with Brien Engel, a professional glass harpist who also plays the mbira. Well-versed in the seasonal hit parade for which the glass harp is uniquely attuned, I’ll wager the Pine Lake setting will lead Engel astray at least for a few moments in the best way possible. – Doug DeLoach

From the venue:

George Trotter has been making music in Atlanta for more than thirty years. He has played in rock bands, composed music for, and performed in theatrical productions for stage and film, and is a frequent collaborator with experimental improvisors.
A current fancy is creating dreamy videos and posting to YouTube.

Skyeris (she/they) is a musician and author based in Atlanta, GA. Their most recent works are Still Moving, a memoir about Long Covid, and sync. fire., a concept album about synchronous fireflies.

The evening opens with Brien Engel, one of few professional devotees of the Glass Harp, a musical instrument with origins in the 18th century, comprised of stemmed glasses each chosen for musical pitch. He’ll play out of his repertoire from many genres, and looks forward to some improvisational moments with others in the Celestial December Lounge! Brien is also a devotee of mbira, a traditional instrument from southern Africa.
