Jackie Venson, Vinyl—Guitarist/songwriter/keyboardist Venson is a one-woman band. She uses electronics to layer and overdub her playing live, sings with R&B intensity and writes solid neo-soul tunes. A love of funk runs deep too, and when taking off on a jazzy solo, she’s lost in the stars. Studio albums don’t do her talents justice since Venson’s ability to connect with an audience and remarkable six-string skills were made for the stage in a small venue, like the one she’s playing tonight. It’s also why she has released as many live discs as studio ones. — Hal Horowitz
