Iris DeMent’s new album, Workin’ On A World, confronts today’s issues like climate change, pandemic, and social injustice, urging us to love one another despite our differences. Her music, described by John Prine as “like you’ve heard, but not really,” blends hymns, gospel, and old country. DeMent, a celebrated singer-songwriter and human rights advocate, reflects on her career, including her acclaimed debut Infamous Angel. Her seventh album, inspired by the turmoil post-2016 elections, offers 13 anthems of love and hope, invoking social justice figures like Martin Luther King and John Lewis. DeMent’s music continues to serve as a healing force, completed with the help of co-producers Richard Bennett, Pieta Brown, and Jim Rooney.
