Asleep at the Wheel, Gas South—Ray Benson and his instantly recognizable baritone voice has been fronting this legendary country swing Texas outfit for over half a century (2021s album was titled Half a Hundred Years), and doesn’t seem to be slowing down now. Regardless of who is currently in the band, and they are consistently top shelf, it’s always a party as Benson leads his troops through highlights from a catalog brimming with hundreds of originals, all of them pretty great, and of course some Bob Wills chestnuts. Even though Benson remains active, at 73 he’ll want to stop touring sometime, so catch him now. — Hal Horowitz

Founded In 1970, Asleep At The Wheel Has Been Part Of The American Roots Music Landscape For More Than 50 Years. Although The Band Got Its Start On A Farm In Paw Paw, West Virginia, Asleep At The Wheel Became A Cornerstone Of The Austin, Texas Scene Upon Its Arrival In 1973. Inspired By Western Swing And Honky-Tonk Country, The Band Has Accrued 10 Grammy Awards.
