CRITIC’S PICK: “Ragtime exists because free men and women of all races and backgrounds were finally able to work together, share their songs & stories, and create something entirely new,” declares the Atlanta Ragtime Band (ARB) homepage, discussing one of the progenitors of the music now known as jazz. “It’s the musical embodiment of the American spirit, a beautiful blend of diverse cultures coming together in harmony.”
Come hear what it sounds like when members of the ARB — a collective of musicians from local ensembles and orchestras such as the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Atlanta Opera Orchestra, Russell Gunn’s Royal Krunk Jazz Orchestra and Joe Gransden Big Band — performs a free lunchtime concert in the lobby of the Rialto Center for the Arts at noon on Wed., Jan. 15.
The program will include compositions by Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. – Doug DeLoach
