CL RECOMMENDS
CRITIC’S PICKMon., Jan. 27-Sun., Feb. 2Atlanta harbors an exceptionally diverse and talented community of contemporary classical and experimentally-inclined musicians. For the last several years, the SoundNOW festival has provided a FREE multi-day showcase for fresh new music from these players and ensembles. Some of the music challenges conventions. Most of it — from acoustic chamber works and electro-acoustic collaborations to solo viola recitals and orchestral improvisations — is way more accessible than you probably think. The 8th SoundNOW festival features twelve ensembles/performers at four venues: Mon., Jan. 27, Javelinas, Meghan Yost (eyedrum); Tue., Jan. 28, Atlanta Improvisers Orchestra (Red Light Café); Wed., Jan. 29, Chamber Cartel, Ben Shirley’s “Seed Tension” [Koplef Recital Hall (KRH)]; Thu., Jan. 30, Neophonia, Petrasek Duo (KRH); Fri., Jan. 31, Jeremy Muller, Majid Araim (KRH); Sat., Feb. 1, smol ensemble, Terminus w/ Jack Thorpe (KRH); Sun., Feb. 2, Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble (Core Dance). – Doug DeLoach
