CRITIC’S PICK: Light Work: Curtis Patterson & Hasani Sahlehe, African Diaspora Museum of Art - Abstract sculptor Curtis Patterson, a former SCAD professor, seamlessly merges elements of antiquity and modernity, often influenced by improvisational jazz and the natural environment, according to the museum. The work of Hasani Sahlehe, a painter from St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, is characterized by vibrant color fields and intricate patterns. “I’m attracted to color relationships that suggest visible light, but also light in terms of weight,” Sahlehe told Interview magazine in 2024. “There’s an intuitive part where I try to approach it how I imagine a musician would.” Both artists will be at the museum on Sunday, March 2 to talk with visitors about their art. - Kevin C. Madigan

<code>THE EXHIBIT</code>

Curtis Patterson and Hasani Sahlehe” explores the profound ways in which Curtis Patterson and Hassani Sahlehe illuminate the breadth of African Diaspora art. Patterson’s three-dimensional sculptures masterfully balance light and shadow, revealing the depth and complexity of form. Sahlehe’s vibrant use of color and abstraction expands and illuminates the conceptual frames that shape Black identity, offering new perspectives and dialogues. Together, their works embody the dynamic and illuminating power of light in art.
