CRITIC'S PICK
Tue., Apr. 8
The title, ‘Lonnie Holley: Sculptures, Paintings, Sandstones, Film, Works on Paper & Music,’ says a lot. A collaborative creation by John Beardsley and Harmony Holiday, ‘Lonnie...Music’ is the first major monograph to coherently examine the unique ideas, practice, craft and performance that constitute the Birmingham, Alabama-born, self-taught artist’s abundant output.
Now based in Atlanta, Holley is best known for his visionary sculpture and installations constructed from found debris, castoff objects and discarded materials, which are on display in major galleries and museums around the world including the High Museum. But there’s so much more to Holley’s epic story and extraordinary accomplishments.
The conversation at the Carter Center between the artist and Virginia Prescott, President of School of Humans Audio and former host of GPB’s “On Second Thought,” promises to be an illuminating one. – Doug DeLoach
