CRITIC’S PICK
Fri., Sep. 26
As if anyone needed another reason to thank David Byrne for existing, let’s give it up for offering Jim White a record deal in 1997 when the struggling artist really needed a life preserver. ‘The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted Wrong-Eyed Jesus’ turned White into a minor cult hero and provided the Pensacola-born, Winterville, GA-based singer-songwriter with the sustenance to keep on keepin’ on.
No stranger to Atlanta audiences, White has performed multiple times at Matt Arnett’s Grocery on Home. Five years ago, he was featured on ‘A Circle of Atoms: the Pasaquan Sessions 2020,’ a special recording made during the COVID shutdown period. A video recording of White’s performance of “Plywood Superman” with his daughter, Willow, providing backing vocals, is a must-see on Vimeo (see link in comments).
Sharing the stage with White at Wild Heaven Friday night is Atlanta-based singer-songwriter-fingerstyle specialist Christopher Paul Stelling. Stelling is also featured on ‘A Circle of Atoms’ performing a mesmerizing improvised duet with Lonnie Holley (see link below). – Doug DeLoach
From the venue:
Numerous songs from White’s back catalog have appeared in film and television, with his Primus-esque Word-Mule being featured in the Heisenberg Episode of Breaking Bad, while more recently Jim’s dreamy duet with Aimee Mann, Static on the Radio, graced the closing credits of the feature film El Camino.
