Mollie Barnes, Agnes Scott College ’06, is Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina Beaufort and Vice President of the Margaret Fuller Society. She has published a dozen articles and book chapters on nineteenth-century women writers. Her first book—Paper Heroines: How Women Reformers Wrote One Another’s Lives in the Sea Islands, 1838–1902 (University of South Carolina Press, forthcoming 2025)—studies the ways women documented one another’s lives in diaries and biographies, focusing on the intersection of gender and race. The National Endowment for the Humanities supported research for Paper Heroines with a 2023 Summer Stipend. Her second book is a critical edition of Laura Matilda Towne’s 1862–1864 diaries—those documenting her first years as founding teacher of Penn School, the now-renowned free school in Beaufort County, South Carolina.
