Peter McPoland, DUG, Variety Playhouse - Indie pop singer/songwriter McPoland is a self-contained artist. He played, sang, composed and produced his most recent release, Big Lucky, and even painted the cover. His rootsy songs are often untidy, edging on shambolic. But he delivers them with a charismatic, everyman voice and enough enthusiasm to entice his audience to sing along with tunes like "Shitshow" and the rollicking "Digital Silence," the latter his most streamed composition. Irish duo DUG warms things up with their vibrant, often joyous Pogues-inspired folk rocking. - Hal Horowitz

At just 20 years old, Peter McPoland creates the kind of finespun folk-pop that feels both beautifully lived-in and undeniably original. McPoland picked up guitar at the age of 14 and taught himself to play, finding lessons to be too regimented. Within a year he'd started writing his own songs, mining inspiration from folk artists like John Prine and Gregory Alan Isakov.
