CRITIC’S PICK
Sat., Sep. 20
As the featured artist of the Atlanta Flamenco Festival 2025, famed guitarist Juani de la Isla will perform a solo concert at an afternoon salon at Mask Center in the Little 5 Points Community Center this Sat., Sep. 20 starting at 3 p.m.
Preceding the concert, critic and author Juan Vergillos, speaking from his office in Seville, Spain, will present a bilingual talk about the history of flamenco guitar.
Currently touring the U.S., de la Isla hails from the island of San Fernando near the port city of Cádiz in southern Spain. The nephew of singer Alvaro Aguilar “Aguichan,” he studied with celebrated flamenco singer Rafael Romero and flamenco guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar. De la Isla is a specialist in the Gypsy flamenco style known as “Morón,” an accompaniment style named for a small pueblo in the heart of Andalucía’s flamenco country. “Moron” emphasizes understatement, strong rhythm, strong accents and short ‘falsetas,’ which fit between verses of the cante.
