Nnenna Freelon
CRITIC’S PICK
Fri., Nov. 14
A week after the re-opening of the Center for Civil and Human Rights (for which her late husband, Philip, was lead architect), Nnenna Freelon will be performing at All Saints Episcopal Church in Midtown as part of the Jazz at all Saints series. The concert will be followed by a Q&A with the artist and a reception.
A nine-time Grammy nominee, Freelon is recognized for her talents as a vocalist, composer, arranger, producer and arts education advocate. Her singing is deeply rooted in the straight ahead jazz tradition and her collaborators include Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Ramsey Lewis, Benny Golson, and Ellis Marsalis. She once starred in a Hollywood Bowl Concert with Jessye Norman.
Freelon’s latest album, Beneath the Skin, was widely praised. A companion book, Beneath the Skin of Sorrow: Improvisations of Loss, was released in October. – Doug DeLoach

Concert takes place in the sanctuary of All Saints’ Episcopal Church beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will be followed by a Q&A with Jazz at All Saints’ Artistic Director Virginia Schenck and a reception in the Parish House.
