Jake Shimabukuro
CRITIC’S PICK
Thu., Nov. 13
Ukelele maestro (I am not making this up) Jake Shimabukuro is performing at City Winery tomorrow night. He truly is a wizard of his instrument, which was probably brought to Hawai'I in the late 1800s by Portuguese settlers from Madeira who brought with them a small guitar called the braguinha.
Shimabukuro’s mother started teaching her son to play the ukulele when he was four. In recent years, he has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and Jimmy Buffett and was nominated by President Joe Biden for the National Council on the Arts.
His latest project, Blues Experience, which features Mick Fleetwood, led to the recording of nine songs live in Maui. The group's rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s "Songbird" is particularly poignant, as it was recorded shortly after Christine McVie's passing. – Doug DeLoach
