Helen Gillet + Ipek Eginli
CRITIC’S PICK
Wed., Oct. 15
Performing at eyedrum next Wednesday are two musicians for whom improvisation and the integration of electronic effects are integral components of the music they create.
Belgian-born, Singapore-raised, New Orleans-based cellist Helen Gillet weaves lovely melodic lines, harmonic textures and rhythmic frameworks into beautiful tapestries that mesmerize and delight while also telling a story. While it’s true to say that Atlanta-based, Turkish-American Ipek Eginli plays the piano, her improvisational explorations, which frequently incorporate modular synths and vocalization, extend far beyond conventional expressions of the instrument.
Gillet and Eginli will each perform solo followed by a duo set featuring both artists. – Doug DeLoach
From the venue:
Join us for an intimate evening where acoustic cello, piano, modular synths, voice, and live electronics weave together worlds.
Helen Gillet, the surrealist archaeologist of the cello, unearths layered rhythms and ghostly melodies through live looping, channeling French chansons, avant garde jazz, and Belgian folk into a singular haunting voice.
Ipek Eginli, a Turkish American experimentalist, conjures sound through electroacoustic improvisation on piano, modular synths, and voice. She describes her work as a process of a creation and a creation of a process.
Together at eyedrum they will craft a spellbinding alchemy of looping, improvisation, and sonic exploration where each moment is built in real time and shaped by bold intuition.
Doors open: 8PM
Admission: $15
