Mike Mattison & Trash Magic
CRITIC'S PICK:
Fri. Jan. 16
Mike Mattison & Trash Magic, The Garden Club at Wild Heaven West End - You'll recognize singer/songwriter Mattison from his long tenure working with Derek Trucks and the expansive Tedeschi Trucks ensemble; less so from a from a few excellent under-the-radar releases by his previous, somewhat unheralded project, Scrapomatic. A recent album with the Trash Magic outfit, Turn a Midnight Corner (his first in five years, recorded for Atlanta's Landslide label), is country and roots/soul-oriented and far less jammy than much of the TT sound. Mattison's grainy voice, taut songwriting and driving style is explosive and live, with a great group behind him, should push these new songs to the next level. - Hal Horowitz
