Aj Ghent & His Singing Guitar
CRITIC'S PICK:
Fri., July 17
AJ Ghent and His Singing Guitar, Tabernacle - It seems like just last year the dreadlocked Ghent and his hypnotic bluesy/jazzy lap steel guitar instrumentals were playing Eddie's Attic and Terminal West, the latter resulting in a live album. Certainly his elevation to this larger venue was helped by a past association with Col. Bruce, Zac Brown and Tedeschi Trucks Band. To his credit, he's kept his unique sound remarkably free of studio enhancements throughout the years, maintaining a stripped down, eerily melodic lyrical fusion to his wordless music. How this translates to a larger space remains to be seen. But it's remarkable that he has taken this non-commercial sound to the next level without the assistance of radio play, slick videos, or watering it down for mass consumption. - Hal Horowitz
