"Golly"

Golly is a gripping short film centered on Martin Freeman, a man tormented by the memory of the day his youngest son died—the same day he betrayed his wife. Martin, the creator of Black and Proud, a fictional hit sitcom from the 90s/early 2000s (think Everybody Hates Chris), spent his career crafting the image of the perfect Black family for television. But in chasing that vision, he unknowingly dismantled his own. The film unfolds as Martin, intoxicated and broken, recounts the tragic details of his son’s death during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Through his raw confession, Golly explores themes of guilt and grief.

About African Film Festival Atlanta:

The African Film Festival Atlanta (AFFATL), powered by the African Film & Arts Foundation Inc. (AFAF), is pleased to announce its official film selection and ticket sales for its 5th edition, taking place from March 26th - 20th, 2026. This year promises five days of unforgettable stories, powerful voices, and cinematic excellence from Africa and the diaspora.

This year's theme, “CTRL + CULTURE = AFRICA'S NEXT CINEMA CODE”, reflects the evolving language of African storytelling in a digital, globalized world. It highlights the powerful intersection of culture, creativity, and technology as filmmakers across the continent and diaspora reimagine and take control of how African stories are told, created, shared, and experienced.
