CRITIC'S PICK: Although Act Two, Caroline in the Garden’s debut album, is released on her own independent label, there is nothing indie about this self-described indie artist. With lush instrumentation, self-assured vocals, and soul revealing lyrics, Act Two is a tour de force that shows just how far the DIY scene has come over the years.

Caroline Milby, as she was known before she quit her attorney day job, claims influence by Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and female artists who dominated music in the ’90s. They might have been influences, but Caroline in the Garden should be leading the pack with this powerful debut. The ten songs don’t beg attention from the listener, but demand it, each forcing their way inside your head, opening up new worlds, new visions, that otherwise might have remained dormant. Intriguing, playful, coy, and uncompromising, each song is its own mini pop opera; each tune different from the other, yet they work as a cohesive whole due to Caroline in the Garden’s vision and confidence. What an unexpected treat!

Auspicious debut albums of this caliber are few and far between. Savor it. — Tony Paris

From the venue:

Caroline in the Garden is the imaginative pop project of singer-songwriter/producer Caroline Milby. Known for warm minor chord energy, off-kilter piano hooks, and lush orchestrations, Caroline explores what it means to unhinge yourself from society'sexpectations after spending decades on the capitalist conveyor belt.

Heavily influenced by Kate Bush and ’90s Lilith Fair icons, Caroline got her start in the Philadelphia art rock scene opening for acts such as Electric Six, Here Come the Mummies and Low Cut Connie.
Her debut album, Act Two, was inspired by her wayward career jump from full-time attorney to full-time musician. Try explaining that to your parents. The album blends intimate storytelling and clever lyricism to explore the depths of an inner world that refuses to cooperate with society's expectations. It has been described as “intensively forward thinking” and “uniquely resonant.”

Eclectic indie pop! Originally from Brooklyn, Charleston soft pop-rock group, P!lot, draws its style from 90s alt-rock, contemporary pop, and French Yé-Yé. Its quirky aesthetic has drawn comparisons to artists like Regina Spektor, Bat for Lashes, and Chairlift.

Lianne Hutcheson, weaving together the soulful tones of blues, jazz, Americana, and rock music, "I do my best to process the various States of Grace I find myself inand into a song to match my mood."
