CRITIC’S PICK
Fr., Apr. 10

Better a last-minute recommendation than none at all, right? Tip o’ the CRITIC’S PIC fedora to Chris Campbell for hipping me to the multi-media performance of ‘Setan Jawa’ (2017) at the Emory Performing Arts Studio tomorrow (Friday) night.

‘Setan Jawa’ (The Javanese Devil) is the first black-and-white silent film by celebrated Indonesian director and producer Garin Nugroho. Inspired by horror classics such as ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Metropolis,’ the film is set in the early 20th century when Indonesia was still under Dutch colonial rule. The story recounts a romance between a beautiful aristocrat and her lower caste suitor who makes a pact with the devil to attain his dreams.

This special event features a new live score written and sung by renowned Javanese artist Peni Candra Rini accompanied by the Emory University Gamelan with Andy McGraw and Darsano Hadiraharjo. – Doug DeLoach

From the venue:

Make sure to come see Setan Jawa: Silent Film/Live Music, Friday, April 10, at 7pm, a silent film with live score created by Peni Candra Rini. Garn Nugroho’s Setan Jawa evokes Javanese mythology through the genre of contemporary horror as inspired by the perennial silent film classic, Nosferatu by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. The film explores Indonesia’s pre-orthodox Islamic stories of the seven deals man makes with the devil in order to gain wealth and the live score dramatically underpins the mysticism and sensuality of Nugroho’s tale of love and sacrifice.
