The SoapGirls at The EARL
The SoapGirls. The EARL — Fifty years ago Jon Landau may have seen the future of rock ’n’ roll and called it Bruce Springsteen, but in the ensuing five decades the music has started to stagnate, even with DIY bands at an all time high. I have seen the saviors of rock ’n’ roll and they are The SoapSisters. Raging guitars and thumping bass provide the kick to their power pop frenzy, a whirlwind of irresistible hooks and just enough “fuck you” to keep listeners on edge. Sisters Noemie and Camille Debray, separated at birth by about a year, are irrepressibly sexy in their YouTube videos, though not in a lascivious and licentious sort of way, but more one of camp and kitsch, inviting the viewer to join in on the fun rather than lust after a lewd encounter. From selling soap on the streets of Cape Town to selling their music to fans around the globe, The SoapSisters know what they want and they know how to get it, foregoing major label record deals — they walked away from Universal and turned down others — to maintain creative control, and, by doing so, they unabashedly deliver a punk rock punch that delivers the goods. — Tony Paris
From the venue:
Early Career and Autonomy
The duo first gained public attention as child street performers in Cape Town, singing and selling handmade soap to benefit local hospitals—an origin that provided both their name and their reputation for social action. Their international breakthrough occurred in 2009 with the song "Boys Boys Boys," which featured on a Japanese compilation disc and sparked global interest. This momentum led to a major-label contract with Universal Music South Africa and high-profile television appearances, including performing as guest artists on Idols SA (Top 10).
