Like Father, Alliance — The Alliance is premiering a new musical by Jacob Ryan Smith and Caroline Pernick that depicts the vagaries of a family caught up in the country’s obsession with true-crime stories. Chris, a girl of 17, moves in with her estranged mother after her father is arrested; the family’s torrid past is then exposed by a podcast leading to more questions than answers. Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden says the show has elements of “ferocious musicality and emotional vulnerability, razor-sharp humor and real danger.” — Kevin C. Madigan

This world premiere folk-pop musical follows seventeen-year-old Chris after her father’s arrest, as a true-crime podcast exposes her family’s past and forces them to face the truth. Presented on the Hertz Stage at Alliance Theatre.
