Les Misérables, Byers Theatre - When Victor Hugo's classic novel was turned into a musical in the early 1980s it grossed ridiculous amounts of money all over the world and still shows no signs of slowing down. Ex-con Jean Valjean tries to improve his lot in life but is constantly thwarted by the irascible Inspector Javert; the tragic heroine Fantine, an unwed mother, figures prominently but comes to a sad end. (You may recall Fantine being played by Anne Hathaway in the 2012 movie adaptation). All told, it's not a story for the faint of heart. The Byers staging is directed by Shuler Hensley, the actor who portrayed Javert in the original Broadway version. - Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

Based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables is as groundbreaking today as it was when it first premiered in London in 1985. Set in nineteenth-century France, it tells the story of Jean Valjean, who is released after 19 years of unjust imprisonment only to face mistrust and mistreatment. Breaking his parole in hopes of beginning a new life, Valjean embarks on a lifelong struggle for redemption while being relentlessly pursued by the determined Inspector Javert, who refuses to believe he can change. Epic, grand, and uplifting, the musical features a magnificent score including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” and “Master of the House.” Seen by over 130 million people in 53 countries, 438 cities, and 22 languages, Les Misérables remains undisputedly one of the world’s most popular and enduring musicals.
