Toro y Moi, Variety Playhouse - Once a pioneer of the chillwave genre, Chaz Bundick took the alias of Toro y Moi, later Chaz Bear and, around 2010, started releasing albums in a dizzying variety of styles, mainly focusing on his soulful vocals. From the disco sheen of the 2011 instrumental Underneath the Pine, to the wispy country smooth soul of Unerthed:Hole Erth Unplugged (2025, his latest, an acoustic revision of Hole Erth from 2024) it's impossible to pigeonhole Toro y Moi's wildly diverse sonic approach. Recent 20-song sets find him revisiting his expansive catalog from electronics to hisguitar heavy "The Loop." It's head spinning, unpredictable and very cool. - Hal Horowitz
