'Fences' by August Wilson, Theatrical Outfit - In 1950s Pittsburgh, Troy Maxson desperately wanted to be a baseball pro but was thwarted due to ageism just as the major leagues started signing Black players; he became a garbage collector instead. His perpetual bitterness prevents him from allowing his son to meet a college football recruiter. August Wilson's seminal 1983 play had Denzel Washington playing the lead role on Broadway; Washington went on to direct and star in the 2016 movie version, along with Viola Davis, to great acclaim.
