Out on Film 2026 - Barbara Forever
From the venue:
Barbara Forever explores the films, archives and enduring cultural impact of pioneering experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer, revealing her ingenious lifelong effort to create and preserve lesbian histories—both personal and collective. Through Hammer’s own images and words, the film follows her across the cultural movements that shaped her life: feminist and queer communities in 1970s San Francisco, the male-dominated New York art world of the 1980s, New Queer Cinema in the 1990s, and the expansion of LGBTQ+ representation in art and culture during the 2000s.
Drawing from more than 80 films and a vast collection of previously unreleased archival material, Barbara Forever allows Hammer to tell her story through her own voice and visual perspective, remaining the ultimate authority on her life, vision and motivations. Winner of the Documentary Teddy Award at the 2026 Berlinale and the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award at Sundance, this vibrant portrait carries Hammer’s radical artistic legacy forward for a new generation.
