Out on Film 2026 - Gugu's World

From the venue:

Gugu is a nearly 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a soccer player and lives under the loving, open-minded care of his grandmother, Dilma, whose warmth gives him space to be himself. In their small community beside the Araújo Lima reservoir—now slowly drying up and exposing the ghostly remains of a submerged town—the two share a quiet but powerful bond that shields them from the disapproval of Gugu’s father and others around them.

As old memories resurface, subtle changes begin to unsettle their routine. Dilma becomes increasingly fragile as her Alzheimer’s disease progresses, and Gugu, terrified of losing the only safe home he has ever known, becomes determined to keep their world intact. Tender, joyful and deeply moving, Gugu’s World won both the Crystal Bear and the Generation Kplus Grand Prix at the 2026 Berlinale.
