- OPEN THE HANGAR, HERE COMES THE PLANE: Rob Bryden and Steve Coogan
Released on DVD and Netflix Instant on Tuesday, The Trip makes you wonder just how big a jerk British funnyman Steve Coogan is in real life. Edited down from a six-episode BBC series from 2010, The Trip presents Coogan as an acid-tongued, fictionalized version of himself, preparing to take a working vacation to the best restaurants in the North of England. He intended the trip as a getaway with his American girlfriend, but when she returns to the states in pursuit of job opportunities, Coogan reluctantly invites his friend, British TV personality Rob Bryden, to come along. The Trip serves as a continuation of the pair's funny comedic interplay from Tristram Shandy, also directed by Michael Winterbottom.
You can still see the episodic structure in the film, which follows Coogan and Bryden as they drive across gorgeous landscapes, rib each other over meals and keep tabs on their home life via phone. Bryden's a happily married father of a new baby, while Coogan chases women, maintains a strained relationship with his children and worries that his career has stuck in a rut. You've probably seen this clip of Coogan and Bryden one-upping each other with their rival Michael Caine impressions:
